Task 3: Type Design & Communication (30%)
In this task you will be asked to design a limited number of western alphabets. Choose an existing font that adheres to the direction that you would like to head in.
Learning Goals
- To develop the ability to construct a readable and legible font.
- To develop the ability to create a design a font with consistent characteristics premised on research and analysis.
Timeframe: Week 08 - Week 09
3. PROCESS OF WORK
WEEK 8
I started off with a few writing/sketches with the letters h, n, o, d, g. I then used 3 different type of marker pens that were 3.0 to write them.
The Marker pens I used are:
- Tombow ABT Brush pen
- Sigma Liquid Permanent Marker Chisel 3.0
- Sigma Liquid Permanent Marker Bullet 3.0
WEEK 9
For the next task I've tried different kind of writing styles, I wasn't sure on where to start at first, but after doing multiple I had choices. Here are some Explorations I did for this work. I used many types of markers, just to see what would look nice to digitize on.
Markers I used:
- Artline Decorite Brush
- Pure Spirit Permanent Marker
- Blue Permanent Marker
Here are some more exploration for the letters; o, l, e, d, s, n, c, h, t, i, g, , . ! #
I looked at some of the 10 fonts given to further my ideas to create a font.

WEEK 10
I did the construction of the letterforms and it was a little confusing at first to construct it about after slowly paying attention to each curves I understood it a bit more.
Figure 3.3 Progressing onto the construction of letterforms. Week 10. (26.11.2024)
I started digitizing on Adobe Illustrator. After many decision and thinking of which one to do i picked the one where I used a pen brush and tried digitizing it. I mainly used the pen tool to create the shapes to get what I want, but also united some shapes to create it as well. It was hard to create it as my letters had a lot of curves so it was little complicated.

Dissection of The Letters
The font I used to deconstruct this was Bodoni STD, as it has many unique curves and the letter 'g' is interesting to me, so I picked this. I did both Caps and non Caps to differentiate them both.

WEEK 11
I started off by putting all the letters I did in Adobe Illustrator and placing them into FontLbab7. I watched all the tutorials from the given tutorial Mr. Vinod gave in teams and followed through.

WEEK 12
Screen grab of FontLab7 process (side-bearings)
My work in progress during FontLab7. Before exporting it into TFF, I did some kerning between letters and make it look nice, so when typing it into Adobe Illustrator.
I tested out it out first in Illustrator and I realized some of the letters for kerning were far apart, so I went back to FontLab and adjusted it a bit.

Then this is the finalizing for my font "calligraphy"

4. FEEDBACK
Week 8: Independent Learning Week
Week 9:
Specific feedback: Needed to explore some more and I did. The font picked from my sketch would be hard to digitize but I can try to make it work. Since I did forget to bring in some of my own pens to class I asked my classmates if I could borrow and worked my way through it.
General feedback: The written task pens needs to be 3.0 and above, otherwise it won't work.
Week 10:
Specific feedback: After many exploration on last weeks task, I showed Ms. Vitiyaa my digitized work on Adobe Illustrator before I proceeded to the next task which was to make it the font on fontlab5. My digitized work got approved.
General feedback: Everyone had the same minor problems for the e-portfolio's, certain tasks weren't specified on what week it is on.
Week 11:
Specific feedback: I asked Ms, Vitiyaa about my previous works on other tasks to see what I could personally improve on better and got positive feedbacks from her. There are still some minor changes that also needs to be done for my letter g.
Week 12:
Specific feedback: My poster design seems fine, I just need to remember that the font size should all be the same. So overall, the design itself is nice.
Week 13:
Specific feedback: Ms. Vitiyaa gave some feedback to my poster design, like making the sentence make more sense and rearrange the whole layout to make it centred.
General feedback: We discussed the final submission deadline that everyone needed to agree on and also to complete the poster design by the end of the day.
5. REFLECTION
Experience: I started off with a few writings of fonts that I created. I did a lot too see what I liked. So far I think this is a great way to explore with typography and learning different way fonts can be altered into. Most of the sketches I did, I didn't really like, so I kept sketching until I found a few interesting ones. It was a tough one not knowing where to start when digitizing my work, but I got the hang of it. Doing this task made me realize that this is the way to create your own font. During this whole process of doing task 3, I learned more about typography and understood more about letter constructing.
Observation: Clearly looking at the 10 fonts given and seeing what can be changed within' them, but also not having a drastic change. Looking at many examples and then continuously writing and trying every handwriting style that I have with the pens helped me decide which ones looks nice as a font. My letter 'g' is a little lopsided in my opinion and I think it could be better.
Findings: With writing different types of handwriting helped me with an idea to keep exploring. I find that each typography has its own specific flick to it and they're all not the same after constructing the letterforms. It was hard to use shapes when making my personal font as the whole letter is curvy.
6. FURTHER READING
Typography Referenced
Figure 6.1 Book Cover.
This book was recommended to the class to learn and understand more about typography. By reading more about the layouts and principles has helped me out on tasks. I tried to read at least a page every week.
Figure 6.2 Type design and development.
This gave me a clear idea that each typefaces have its own unique ways of designing letterforms. Understanding more on each stroke.
